Oswestry 51 Ellesmere Port 5

ELLESMERE Port slipped to the bottom of South Lancs/Cheshire Division Two on Saturday after they were well beaten by the league leaders.

The heavy defeat extended the Whitby Sports & Social Club outfit’s losing run to seven games and leaves them facing a real fight to avoid being relegated back into Division Three.

The good news for the Oilers is that the majority of their six remaining matches are against teams in the bottom half of the table.

The first of which comes this Saturday when they entertain seventh-placed Dukinfield (2.15pm).

Fly-half Chris Carbutt will return after his appeal against a 12-week suspension, incurred after he was sent off for verbally abusing a referee, was reduced by three weeks.

Port started well against Oswestry and were in the game after the first quarter.

But there was no stopping the hosts once they hit their stride.

Stand-off Eddy Edwards reduced the arrears with an unconverted try.

Ellesmere Port 2nds fared better on Saturday.

They won a competitive contest 17-7 at Wirral 4ths.

Ellesmere Port 3rds ran out 65-0 winners at home to Liverpool Collegiate 4ths.

Centre Dan Rowett starred, scoring four tries and having a hand in a number of others.
