FORMER Chester RUFC player Gavin Woods has been rewarded for his fine form with a call-up to the England Counties team’s tour of Spain.
Woods, 28, a former pupil at Queen’s Park High School in Handbridge, has been in impressive form for Caldy and that has not gone unnoticed by selectors who have named the prop in the Counties squad that yesterday headed out for the three-match tour.
Woods, who will be leaving National League North Two Caldy for League One Macclesfield next season, is delighted to have cemented a place in the national squad for the second-year running.
“I was really pleased to get the call up for the Counties squad as it caps off an excellent season for me,” said Woods, who was born in Sheffield but raised in Handbridge.
“We had a good season at Caldy and I think that, personally, my game has come on leaps and bounds under our head coach Stu Turner.
“I was called-up to the squad last season so it was something that I definitely wanted to be a part of again and that I was working toward.”
During the 12-day tour, Woods and his England Counties XV team-mates will be taking on a Madrid XV on Saturday, a Castilla Leon Union XV in Salamanca on Wednesday, before finishing with a match against a Spain XV in Valladolid on June 11.
“I am really looking forward to getting out to Spain and playing some rugby,” said Woods.
“They have some good sides and the quality of Spanish rugby is definitely on the up. They’ll provide us with a stern test.”
