Ellesmere Port 55 Liverpool University 0

THE Oilers handed out a lesson in rugby to the students on Liverpool University on Saturday.

Third-placed Port were in ruthless form, denying their mid-table visitors a single point in the South Lancs/Cheshire Three clash.

The scoring came at regular intervals with Port taking an 8-0 lead in the first 10 minutes with a try from prop James Callaghan and a penalty from the trusty boot of fly-half Chris Carbutt.

Port continued to exert pressure on the university side and fullback Anthony Jones was the next player to sprint over the line.

Callaghan doubled his try tally not long after and, with two more conversions from Carbutt, Port led 22-0 on the half hour.

Port’s next try was an excellent line break by pacy winger Rob Finlay, who went under the posts. Carbutt added the extras to make it 29-0 at half time.

After the break, winger and man of the match Finlay registered his second try of the day before back row James Shinton helped himself to a fine individual effort.

It was 43-0 with 15 minutes remaining, and the Oilers managed a further two scores before the final whistle – courtesy of hooker Craig Jones and full-back Anthony Jones.

On Saturday, the Oilers travel to take on leaders Manchester Medics. The table-toppers’ only league loss this season was inflicted by the Port.

While the Medics look well on course to claim the title, the race for the second promotion slot is on and the Oilers are battling hard with Prenton and Port Sunlight.
