ROYAL Chester Rowing Club’s women’s first eight had an exhilarating race at the Women’s Eights Head of the River Race on the Thames.

Clashing oars as they forced their way past seven crews who started in front of them on the Boat Race course, they beat all of their Northern rivals to finish an impressive 34th overall – out of a 300-strong field – and third in the provincial club pennant classification.

The result was the best in the history of women’s rowing at the club.

A last-minute saw a composite crew from Royals and Agecroft Rowing Club start at the back of the race before finishing a creditable 197th.

Royal Chester Rowing Club host the North of England Head of the River Race on Saturday.

More than 140 crews will descend on the Dee for a 5km race from Eccleston to the Groves.
