STRONG winds failed to deter members of Royal Chester Rowing Club when they turned out at the Head of the Trent event.

The club’s women’s first eight got caught in a hail storm on their way up to the start, which ensured a miserable wait for the race to begin.

As cold muscles relaxed into a strong rhythm, the crew whipped the boat along, finishing strongly in a time of 17 minutes and 57 seconds.

A good effort resulted in second place in the intermediate three category, behind a very strong crew from host club Nottingham City RC.

It was a great result for the crew of Jennifer Cumiskey, Anna Tweed, Michelle Bennett, Laura Magee, Helen Burkhalter, Angela Sheldon, Caroline Ealey, Sarah Hocknell and cox Laura Whitley.

Queen’s Park High School Rowing Club braved torrential rain at the Trafford Head.

The two singles – Lucy Clegg (WJ14 ) who rowed over 1k and Daniela Hyatt (WJ15) who rowed over 3.2k – both won their races. The J15 double, with brothers Joel and Leon Langmead, were blown into the bank midway in their 3.2k race but still won their group.

Joel and Leon were joined in the J15 quad by James McDermott, Ben Archer from Trafford and cox Daniel Wallace as they won their 3.2k race.
