GROSVENOR Rowing Club claimed a race win at the UK’s largest one-day regatta.

The club’s senior women’s eight struck gold at the Wallingford Regatta at Eton Dorney, the rowing venue for the 2012 London Olympics.

It was the first time Grosvenor had attended the regatta, which attracted 2,500 competitors from across the UK, racing in lanes over the 2k Olympic course.

In the morning session, competition was fierce for Grosvenor’s senior men, with the IM2 crew only narrowly missing out on a place in the final.

However, it was women’s IM3 eight – Becky Read, Goranka Bosanac, Helen Rowland, Tanith Allwood, Jess Fowler, Laura Antrobus, Leanne Ratcliffe and Yvonne Wharton, with Louise Tobias coxing – who bought home the pots for the day.

Putting in a strong performance in their heat to win by more than 10 seconds, they then put in a storming row in the final to win the Wallingford Invitation Skiff Regatta Cup.

In the afternoon, with choppier waters making conditions more difficult, Grosvenor’s senior men and senior women entered doubles. Both the WIM1 and the men’s IM1 put in excellent performances against tough competition, with the women’s double only narrowly missing out on a spot in the final.
