ANGLING: WINTER pike fishing was at its best in Sunday's Grosvenor Estate AC match on the serpentine at Eaton Hall.

Ron Evans won with pike of 13-2-0 and 8-12-0 to a plug bait for a top of 21-14-0. In second was Danny Mort with pike of 7-8-0 and 6-0-0 for 13-8-0, beating his dad John with a single pike weighing 10-0-0.

The Willaston AC team fished mid-way in the opening Jack Purchase Winter League match fished on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Maghull. The club's top weighers were Barry Davies, who took roach to 2-13-0, Brian Woods on 2-11-8 and Tony Churchill with 2-4-8.

Steve Openshaw did the double in the week's open matches on the Lingmere Fishery. He won the Thursday match with carp weighing 38-8-0. Openshaw was also a winner in the Saturday match with carp for 24-9-0 proving too good for Robbie Woods (19-6-0).

Simon Loyley triumphed in the Holt and Farndon AC match on the River Dee at Holt last Saturday. Drawing on the top sandbank above the bridge, he ended with several chub in the 2-0-0 range plus smaller fish for a 19-0-0 total. Wendy Locker was second with chub, roach and dace to reach 15-0-0.

The Moorcroft Shield was on offer in the Mickle Trafford AC doubles match on the Dearnford Hall trout fishery at Whitchurch. The top duo, Arthur Gillan and Jim Stanley, both took a brace of rainbows to put together 6-8-0. John Chamberlain and Bob Vickers were next with 6-0-0, followed by John McHugh and Dave Sanders on 5-13-0.

Carl Fletcher netted top spot in the Rod n' Reel 'match teams' match held on the Heronbrook Fishery. With carp to weigh 86-0-0, he bettered Jamie Hughes with more carp for 58-0-0 and edged out Geoff Grantham who was third with 38-0-0.

Martin Holding was up front in the two Tuesday Rovers AC matches fished on the Milton Green Fishery. He won the club's Tuesday match with a carp catch weighing 50-4-0 to beat Shaun Sandham (48-12-0) and John Heald (36-12-0).

Sandham came out on top in the Thursday match with his carp-based 65-6-0 beating Holding (46-4-0) and Malcolm Dawes (13-9-0). Jason Rogers was a high-flyer in Saturday's Airbus Broughton AC match fished on the Tranquility Lake at Leeswood Fishery. With carp to weigh 18-15-0, he out-fished Bob Asher (12-12-0).
