ATHLETICS: VALE Royal AC's middle-distance rising star, Tom Carter, has been selected to run for Britain again this weekend.

Carter ran in the European Under-23s Championship in Poland and was just edged out of the medals.

The weekend's event in Ashford, Kent, is an invitation meet.

Carter was last year's winner of the Vale Royal 'Pie and Peas' Race, a five-miler in Moulton, which is on Wednesday next week.

The race starts at 7.30pm and the club welcomes entries of any standard on the night at The Lion. A field of 200 is expected.

Cheshire Tigers girls' team retained second spot in the National League on Sunday.

The composite squad from West Cheshire AC, Vale Royal AC and Crewe & Nantwich AC showed their strength at the Bebington Oval in the third round of the National Under-20 Junior Track and Field League.

They were runners-up behind league leaders Wigan.

Vale Royal's Nicky Archer showed impressive pace to clinch victory in the 3,000m with a time of 11 minutes 28.4 seconds. Clubmate Fiona Rudkin claimed second spot in the 800m.

The Tigers' depleted men's squad produced a series of quality performances.

Winsford-based Stephen Butterfield equalled his personal best of 11.1 seconds in the 100m for a decisive and deserved victory.

Stephen Mitchell clocked 4:40.9 in his 1,500m debut for the Tigers.
