ATHLETICS: THREE West Cheshire AC members started the cross-country season with podium finishes last weekend.
Bradley Edwards, Kerry Riley and Charlotte Roach finished second in their respective age group races in the opening round of the North Staffs Cross-Country League at Park Hall Country Park, Stoke-on-Trent.
Bradley grabbed runner-up spot after a brave run in the Under 11 boys' race, Kerry capitalised on her good form to secure second position in the U15 girls' race and Charlotte was second in the U17 girls' race.
Georgina Wright competed in the U13 girls' event and worked hard to secure sixth spot, as did Rebecca Grimes in the U15 girls.
Jack Bancroft competed in the U15 boys' race to finish 26th, and Jules Bancroft and Mary Radford lined up for the senior ladies and finished 67th and 88th respectively.
Brian Beattie and Geoff Harvey clinched awards at the Flintshire 10k road race at Mold. Beattie finished third in the Over 60s age group and 93rd overall with a time of 43 minutes 42 seconds, and Harvey grabbed third spot in the Over 55 category and 145th position overall in a time of 46.43, behind winner Kihara Zacharay of Birchfield Harriers, who posted 29.30.
West Cheshire AC begin their North West Indoor Sportshall League season this Sunday, hosting the opening round at Stan-ney Oaks Leisure Centre, Ellesmere Port (1pm). They will face opposition from Deeside, Stafford, Handforth, Wirral and Southport/Waterloo.
Members of West Cheshire AC should assemble at Stanney on Sunday no later than 12.15pm.
Any West Cheshire AC juniors aged under 15 wishing to compete in this season's North West Sportshall League campaign are being encouraged to attend training sessions at Monday at Bishops' High Sportshall, Chester (from 7pm), or at Stanney High Sportshall, Ellesmere Port, on Wednesdays (from 7pm), and Saturdays (from 10am).
West Cheshire have a family quiz night at Little Stanney Village Hall tonight (7.30pm start).
Other fixtures this weekend include the second round of the North Wales Cross-Country League tomorrow, at Eirias Park, Colwyn Bay (2.10pm first race).
Sunday fixtures include the Liverpool 10k and Half Marathon (11am start); the Breidden Hills Seven Miles Hill Race with 2,300ft of climb, at Criggion (11am start); and the Anglesey Marathon, from Bodedern, Holyhead (9am start).
Anyone wanting to join West Cheshire AC training sessions at the Stanney track and field complex should go along on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8pm, and on Saturdays between 10am and noon. Further details from Dennis Wall on 0151 2011254.
Entry forms are available for this year's Chester Round The Walls Race on Boxing Day. The entry limit of 400 was exceeded last year, so entrants are being urged to enter before the December 16 closing date to avoid disappointment. Further details from Brian Hastings on 01244 311908.
Leading Tattenhall Runners in the recent Sutton Six was Mike Whiteside in 35th place in 40.01, followed by Mark Smith 55th in 42.09, Greg Berti 65th in 43.05, Alison Smith 102nd in 45.42, Helen Lester 103rd in 45.45, Dave Clarke 106th in 45.51, Caroline Howard 133rd in 47.33, Lesley Clague 216th in 59.44.
Nick Holmes led the club home in the 16-miles Sandstone Trail race in 28th place in 2.19.59, from Steve Hammond 29th in 2.20.02 and Greg Berti 68th in 2.37.25.
In the B race, Sarah Hammond was 14th in 1.19.15, from Dave Ratcliffe 21st in 1.22.34, Sandra Owen 29th in 1.25.34, Dave Clarke 47th in 1.28.26, Lawrie Woodley 51st in 1.29.57, Caroline Howard 71st in 1.33.55, Tessa Swaine 99th in 1.42.06, Richard Barratt 100th in 1.43.42, Jane Woodley 1.52.12 and Lesley Clague 1.56.10.
