Paul Economides says his boxing career has had a shot in the arm after being confirmed as the chief support for the legendary Roy Jones Jnr in Liverpool on September 12.

Economides is on the bill for the 46-year-old American's WBF intercontinental cruiserweight title fight at Aintree Racecourse, with the 28-year-old super bantamweight set to face Ghanaian super flyweight number one Prosper Ankrah.

After the disappointment of having a scheduled fight at the Grand Central Hall in Liverpool in May called off less than 24 hours before, Economides, who boxes out of Chester Boxers in Hoole, says that securing a strong opponent on such a high profile bill has breathed new life into his career.

"When I saw it was confirmed I had this surge of adrenaline and hunger to get back in the gym and get going," said Economides, from Vicars Cross.

"He (Jones Jnr) was as big as Floyd Mayweather Jnr back in the day and he's one of the best to ever do it. It's going to be amazing to be boxing on the same bill and to be the chief support to his fight.

"He is still a top fighter and pulls in the crowds. It's going to be an amazing night and there's bound to be some TV exposure for me because he is such a big draw. That is a massive plus for me and my career. It's exactly what I need right now."

Jones Jnr made boxing history in 2003 when he defeated John Ruiz to claim the WBA heavyweight title, becoming the first former middleweight title holder to win the belt in 106 years.

He had famous clashes with Bernard Hopkins, Antonio Tarver, Jeff Lacy and Joe Calzaghe over the years and although his career declined in the late 2000s, he still boasts a phenomenal 61-8 winning record.

For Economides, his Ghanaian opponent Ankrah also boasts a winning 24-5 record and features inside the world's top 100 super flyweights.

He fought current super bantamweight world number one Carl Frampton at Sheffield's Motorpoint Arena back in 2012, where he was stopped in the second round. But Economides believes his opponent will pose a welcome challenge after breezing past lesser challengers in recent months.

"He is right up there in the world and is inside the top 100 and he's the type of guy I need to be fighting if I'm going to move on," said Economides, who easily dispatched Czech fighter Petr Gyna in the first round back in May in a bout at York Hall, Bethnal Green.

"He's fought on the world stage against Frampton and he showed he couldn't really cut it. It's up to me to show what I can do against him and show that I'm ready for the next level. I want to be on the same level as those top guys.

"I was so down after the cancellation of my last fight. When you've done all that training and have nothing to show for it it's really tough to take.

"But I'm pumped for this and training is going really well. We've got 12 weeks until the fight and I'll be ready. Things are moving along for me now and I'm ready to take my chances."
