Paul Butler is aiming to sign off for the year in style.

The Baby-Faced Assassin fights for the final time in 2016 in Saturday’s big BoxNation ‘3 Lights Out’ event.

Chester-born Butler will take on Mexican Alexander Cazares at the Lagoon Leisure Centre in Paisley.

It will be the 28-year-old’s second bout under top new trainer Joe Gallagher.

And, providing everything goes to plan, it could be his last before he has a crack at a second bantamweight world title.

Butler, who lives in Great Sutton, said: “I’m really looking forward to it.

“Just to be back out there, so quickly, will be great. All I’m concentrating on is getting the win and then setting myself up for a big fight in 2017.”

Butler’s first outing under Ring Magazine Trainer of the Year Gallagher came just six weeks ago.

That night the former ABA champion produced a punch perfect display to defeat Cazares’ compatriot Alexis Ruiz at the Bolton Whites Hotel.

Since linking up with Gallagher, Butler has watched stablemates Liam Smith and Anthony Crolla box in world title showdowns.

And Butler said: “Working with Joe is even better than I expected, if I’m being honest.

“We’ve been working very hard, working on different things, and improving minor little things, to make me even better. It has all gone very smoothly.

“Since I’ve come here there have been some massive fights. It was great to be around them and I want to have a bit of that myself.”

Butler won his first world title at bantamweight in June 2014 when he beat Stuart Hall in Newcastle.

He immediately relinquished the IBF crown in an effort to become the first Englishman to step down a weight and win a second world title in more than 100 years.

But he is now back at bantamweight and, after dispatching Ruiz in his mightily impressive comeback bout in October, he initially had current IBF champion Lee Haskins in his sights.

However, with Haskins set to take on Shohei Omori in Japan on New Year’s Eve, Butler has turned his attention to setting up a huge clash with WBA champion Jamie McDonnell.

The Vauxhall Motors ABC graduate has no doubt he has the tools to end McDonnell’s long winning run.

But for now all his concentration is on Saturday’s fight with Cazares in Scotland.

Butler said: “We’ve watched him and he’s no mug. He’s mixed in some good company.”
