Flat racing legend and four-time winner of the Chester Vase, Pat Eddery, has died at the age of 63.

Eddery, an 11-time flat racing champion, is regarded as one of the finest jockeys of all time after riding over 4,600 winners, winning 14 British classics in a glittering 36-year career.

The Irishman enjoyed much success on the Roodee and won the Chester Vase four times, the first of which came in 1985 on board Law Society. He followed that up with wins in 1991 (Toulon), 1993 (Armiger) and 2000 on board Millenary.

He rode two winners in the Chester Cup, taking victory in 1989 with Grey Salute and in 2002 with the John Dunlop-trained Fantasy Hill.

Away from Chester he claimed famous victories at the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes as well as the Prix de'lArdc de Triomphe of 1986 on Dancing Brave.

Eddery, who retired from flat racing in 2003 and was awarded an OBE two years later, had been suffering from ill health.

His total of British winners he rode to glory is only bettered by Sir Gordon Richards.
