ATHLETICS: BOUNDLESS energy and natural talent helped Moorfield to win the Widnes Primary Schools Athletics Competition to qualify for this summer's Merseyside Youth Games.

They will represent Halton at the Wirral event and will be joined by St John Fisher RC, the Widnes runners-up, and Pewithall who will carry Runcorn's athletics banner into Bebington Oval on Sunday, July 10.

Four schools took part in the indoor Widnes tournament at Kingsway Leisure Centre with Ditton CE and St Gerard's RC also contributing to its success.

Each took forward a team of seven boys and seven girls from Years 5 and 6 in events which tested their running, throwing, jumping and agility.

Councillor Phil Harris, Halton Borough Council's executive board member for sport, said: 'Halton's young people have done us proud in previous youth games and this year is bound to be no exception.

'We have a lot of talent here and the young people's enthusiasm knows no bounds.

'I congratulate these young athletes in qualifying and look forward to seeing the rest of the squad come together.'

The Widnes competition was run in conjunction with the borough's sports development team, Halton & Frodsham Harriers and the International Fun and Team Athletics Association.

Eighteen sports students from Halton collegiate helped to officiate.

The winners will be coached in the lead-up to the youth games which also involves teams from Liverpool, St Helens, Wirral, Sefton and Knowsley.
