BOXING: CREWE ABC youngster Owen Sterry made an outstanding debut as he starred at Biddies Working Men's Club in Longton.

Sterry was matched up with Bury ABC's Chris Poole and refused to allow his opponent to dominate during the first round.

Sterry landed some heavy right hands to Poole's body with the second round following the same pattern.

Trainer Joey Singleton said: 'I instructed Owen to use a three-punch combination, with a double left jab followed by a straight right, if he wanted to stop his opponent in the third round.'

Sterry carried out Singleton's advice to the letter and within a minute of the third round, the referee gave Poole a standing count before ruling he was unfit to continue.

Light welterweight Richard Daly was next in the ring for Crewe, taking on Stoke's Marvin Campbell, who was named after boxing legend Marvin Hagler.

Daly was a little ring-rusty after spending a lot of time away from the gym due to exams, but after 10 days' training he was keen to take on Campbell.

The bout started at a tremendous pace with neither boxer giving an inch in an opening round which had the crowd on their feet at the bell.

Daly has had to change his style of boxing to accommodate his build but continued to match his opponent, only for Campbell to be awarded a close majority decision by the judges.

Singleton said: 'Richard did himself and Crewe ABC proud and, at the end of the contest, the MC for the night asked everybody to rise and applaud both lads for an excellent bout.'

The last boxer to perform for Crewe was light welterweight Ian Clyde who was topping the bill against Chorley ABC's Lee Graves.

The contest lived up to expectations with plenty of exchanges at close quarters and Clyde getting the better of the long-range manoeuvres. But again the Crewe man came out on the wrong side of a majority points decision after three all-action rounds.

Singleton said: 'Myself and my fellow trainer, Lee Murray, felt our three boys featured in the best three bouts of the night and were pleased with their performances.'

Crewe ABC were back in action at Shrewsbury last night and also feature on tomorrow night's bill at Uttoxeter.
