CARL Greenwood retained the Knight's Grange Golf Club Championship trophy while Sir John Deane's A-level student Oliver Batley used the same tournament to confirm his potential.

The 17-year-old student, who plays off 20, hit the best nett score of the two-day competition, an impressive 136.

Batley said: 'My handicap has come down from 28 in the couple of years I've been playing.

'I have won a few medal competitions, but nothing like this.'

Greenwood, meanwhile, is already planning to defend his title against Batley and others next year. A hat-trick would certainly go down very well.

'It was a high quality field. It's especially satisfying to win against the likes of Jamie McCarthy and Patrick Murray, two ex-professionals,' he said.

Greenwood scored 73 and 71 to edge out McCarthy by a single shot overall.

He plays off 3.7 and returned to Knight's Grange from Christleton three years ago. Since then the 35-year-old has been picking up other victories home and away in singles, pairs and teams of four competitions.
