FORMER Vale Royal AC sprinter Hayley Jones became a national champion on Saturday.

Jones won the AAA's 200m Under 20s title at Bedford in 23.61. She left Vale Royal for better track facilities at Wigan.

Stevie Stockton and Charlotte Roach, meanwhile, contested the 300m event.

Stockton was fifth in 9:40.67, beating Roach by three places and 4.72secs.

Triple jumper Hanna Hewitson was sixth in her event with a leap of 11.78m.

Vale Royal's Gareth Williams, Graham Miles and Darren Cottier, running under the name of Plastic Vets, finished second in the Tattenhall Tough Team Race on Sunday.

The event attracted some 49 teams and Vale Royal's five entries all finishing in the top 10, namely: Team Comb Over (Weedall, Gough, Thornley) 4th; Two Jocks and an Englishman (Annable, Todd, Heywood) 5th; Lady and the Cramps (Archer, Edwards, Whitby) 8th, and VR Vets (Maher, Brown, Ryabov) 9th.
