CYCLING: The annual 12-hour time trial, mostly in Cheshire, was won by Chris Hopkinson, of Mat-lock Cycling Club, who covered more than 260 miles.

Second was Robert Nelson, of Dukinfield CC, with 259.6 miles and third Malcolm Horne, Warrington RC, in 251.09 miles. Team winners were Lyme Road Club.

Susan Massie, of Birkenhead North End CC, added the national junior sprint championship to her national schools' title with a convincing performance at the new track at Newport. She now has her sights on going for the women's senior sprint at the Manchester Velodrome in October.

Wirral's Chris Boardman was part of the official coaching team at the Olympics in Athens. One of those he helped was the new 4,000m Olympic champion Bradley Wiggins, who broke the Olympic record on his way to landing gold, emulating the gold medal ride by Boardman at the Barcelona Olympics.

Steve Cummings, of Pensby, won a silver medal as a member of the GB 4,000m team pursuit squad, who beat France with a new British record time in the semi-final but lost gold in the final to world champions Australia.
