GYMNASTICS: Saltney teenager Melanie Roberts helped the City of Liverpool A team retain the British Women's Team Championship at Guildford last weekend.

The 15-year-old St David's High School pupil was continuing her comeback from a serious arm injury as she bids for a place in the Great Britain team for the Olympic Games in Athens in August.

But it was Bunbury's Beth Tweddle, 19, who led Liverpool to a hat-trick of victories at the event, scoring the highest all-round result, 36,050 points, and also winning the Ursel Free trophy for the highest apparatus score - 9.600 on bars.

Fourteen teams with 79 gymnasts took part in the event, which also served as the third European selection trial for the championships in Amsterdam at the end of this month.
