CHESTER is now home to a tae kwon-do world champion – and she is only nine years of age.

Alex Roberts, who attends Overleigh St Mary’s Primary School in Handbridge, won gold at the Tae Kwon-do World Championships in Telford.

The England junior international fought competitors from across the globe and had the honour of receiving her medal from Grandmaster Choi Chang Keun, a tae kwon-do expert who holds the rank of 9th dan.

Alex, whose win was in the girls sparring red belt under 137cm category, has been training for four years and is currently a black tag, but she is taking her black belt grading test on November 20.

Alex’s mum, Zoe, said: “I’m well proud of her. I think mums are always more excited than the kids. When she won I was so ecstatic I was shaking and couldn’t text anyone.

“Alex’s black belt exam is on her 10th birthday so, fingers crossed, she can have a great day.”

Jon Emm, a 4th dan who coaches Alex at Chester GTUK Taekwondo in Handbridge, said: “Alex fought brilliantly to win gold.

“Alex probably trains more than anyone else at my club does and I have high hopes that she will be a real star performer at major tournaments for years to come.

“As her instructor, it means as much, or more to me, to see her winning medals as it ever has to win them myself and I was never world champion.”
