ANGLING: JOHN Woodrow had two memorable catches last week while on holiday in Devon.

He went to the Stafford Moor Fishery and put more than 179lbs of carp on the scales, just days after landing 133lbs of carp which was enough for only fourth place in the open match.

With 28lbs 4oz of carp, Brian Crawford won the Rake and Pikel AC match at Border Fishery from Roy Cowley's 27-12-0 and John Tyreman's 24-12-0.

A charity match in aid of the Chronicle's Sam Fynn Appeal raised £440. It was held at Lloyd's Fishery where a 4-12-0 carp earned victory for Jeremy Page.

Steve Boyd was up front in the Lingmere Fishery open match with a 54-10-0 mixture, ahead of Dave Randles jnr with 49lbs and Robbie Woods with 38-8-0. The Saturday open match went to Randles with a 38-8-0 mixture, ahead of Woods with 35-8-0 and Dave Randles senior with 31-8-0.

Geoff McCalmont won the Helsby Sports and Social Club AC match on the BICC pools with 3-9-8 of chub and roach. Terry Archer took 3-6-8 of skimmers and Wayne Percival landed 3-5-0.

Mark Davies was top rod in the Manley AC match at Mouldsworth Mere with 18-8-0 of carp, from Steve Roxburgh's 18-2-0 carp and Bill Bristowe's 15-14-0.

Julie Bimpson took a 9lbs carp in the Lobol AC Wednesday match at priory pool to boost her total of 9-4-0, enough to win the match from Sid Robinson who had a 6-13-0 mixture and Ian Courtney with 6-5-0. The Sunday match at Lingmere went to Steven Dean with 21-4-0 of carp from Harry McWha's 17lbs and George Edwards with 16-12-0.

Tony Buckley took the honours in the Blacon Social Club AC match at Offa's Dyke pool with 9-5-0 of small carp. Michael Coleclough had 8-10-0 of carp and George Snell had 8-5-0.

Brian Summerville used floating breadcrust to take 25-4-0 of carp from Easton Hall's stock ponds to win the Grosvenor Estate AC match. Janet Williams had 22lbs and John Mort 21-10-0.

There was a tie for first place in the Railway, Barrow AC match on the Sabrina length of the Severn with Bob Ruscoe and Alf Lewis taking 4lbs. Colin Owen was third with 0-8-0.

Malpas AC went to Dimelow's pool where Kevin Arrowsmith, a junior member, took carp up to 6-8-0 for a total of 15-10-0. His father Keith had 10-11-0 and Ron Burgess 4-10-0.

Wendy Locker guested in the Willaston AC match on the SU Canal at Market Drayton and came out on top with 19-6-9 of chub and skimmers. Paul Edwards was next with 17-0-2 from Trevor Jackson with 15-15-0.

Jim Strange was top in the Tarvin Sands AC match on home waters with 26lbs of carp from Phil Crimes' 16-12-0 and Les Picken with 14lbs.

Frank Doran showed the way in the Greyhound Saughall AC match at Milton Green Fishery with 38-8-0 of carp. Steve Bampton was next with 37-4-0 of carp and Trevor Edwards third with 35lbs.

On a dour day, Ian Piercy won the Caldy AS match at Gweryd Fishery with a crucians-based 3-14-0 from Rob Winstanley's 3lbs mixture and Brian Ripon's 2-9-0 of skimmers and roach.

Jack Thompson was an easy winner of the Mickle Trafford AC match at Ty-Mawr reservoir with a 3lbs brace of rainbows taken with a montanna. Bob Vickers, Richard Roberts and Andy Jones each took 2lb rainbows.

A charity match organised by Airbus, Broughton AC at Wepre Pool, Connah's Quay, raised £1,000 for the Fire Service Benevolent Fund.

John Woolley was top rod in the Ellesmere Port British Legion AC match at Lloyd's Meadow Fishery with 23-6-0 of carp, from John Ryder with 13-6-0 of carp and Barry Hawkswood with 12-5-0.

Barry Gabriel led the field at the end of the Lavister AC match at Cheshire Fishery with 35-11-0 of carp, from John Murdoch with 8lbs of skimmers and roach and Geoff Watkins with 6-13-0 of roach. Top senior was Gordon Rose with 1-8-0.

Billy Gore won the Rivacre AC match on the Widnes length of the Sankey-St Helens Canal with 10-11-0 of perch and eels, well ahead of Ian Lloyd's 6-13-0 of roach and perch and Dave Grimes's 6-5-0.

Neston Match Anglers fished at Badgers Rake Fishery where Ted Evanson landed 12lbs of carp and crucians to beat Les Hall's 12lbs of silver fish and Billy Mason, who had 9-2-0.

Castrol AS members had a two-day break out of Plymouth and, on the first day, Les Williams took a 47lbs conger eel using a mackerel flapper, while Stuart Birks had a 20lbs pollock and Jim Fellows a 17lbs ling. The following day, Fellows landed a 45lbs conger, a 22-8-0 pollock, a 20lbs ling and a 3lbs whiting.

FISHERIES NEWS Lake Hill: Steve Price, of Neston, tempted a 15-6-0 rainbow to a toby spinner; Philip Greer, of Chester, fished an olive zonker to take a 3-8-0 rainbow and 12-year-old Kieran Sterieau, of Rock Ferry, took a 6lbs rainbow to a worm. During the school holidays, all juniors under 16 will be charged half price if accompanied by an adult.

Milton Green: Ben Woods, of Burwardsley, coaxed common carp weighing 17-8-0, 15lbs, 9lbs and 7lbs to floating breadcrust; Derek Amson bagged an 11lbs common carp and four other carp between 5lbs and 6lbs and 14-year-old Liam McClements, of Wirral, found a 20lbs ghost carp by fishing floating dog biscuit.

Four Oaks: Fifteen-year-old Wesley Wheel, of Ellesmere Port, netted mirror carp of 7-8-0 and 6lbs to luncheon meat and Simon Clarke, also of Ellesmere Port, took 25lbs of carp up to 10lbs using sweetcorn.
