HOOTON & District HS were racing from Monmouth again at the weekend.

The members met at the club HQ and entered nearly 400 birds.

The transporter collected them at about 8.30pm on Friday and off they went to the racepoint. Saturday dawned and as the weather along the route home was quite bad, with mist and periods of rain, the convoyer would not release the birds until the weather improved.

After rechecking the weather several times, the birds were released at 1.30pm. They romped home to their lofts, and members were very pleased at very good returns.

Results – 1 G Harrison (velocity – 1539.53ypm); 2 BV Jones (1539.06ypm); 3 G Harrison (1532.93ypm); 4 Jones & Foster (1528.40ypm).

These birds were very close and arrived together.

Now for more advice on homing.

By now your young birds will have been outside their home and getting used to the big outside world. Now is the time to control them and teach them good habits.

They must enter the loft when you call them, and to this end, you will teach them that when they do enter the loft, they will receive a titbit or their food. Peas and protein seeds are the order of the day at this time. When they begin to take to the skies then you need to lighten the food by using smaller seeds such as barley, dari, and oil seeds.
