Matty Fagan plans to exact his revenge in front of a hometown crowd when professional boxing returns to Ellesmere Port next month.

Fagan will headline a show at the town’s new multi-million pound Cheshire Oaks Arena on Saturday, July 25.

It will be the first time he has boxed in the town since turning pro in 2012 and he has a double incentive to make it a night to remember.

He has a rematch with Andrei Podusov – the man who took his unbeaten record last October – with a new version of the British Masters lightweight title on the line.

“The date’s been put back and put back but we’ve got it sorted now and this is what I’ve wanted all along,” said Fagan, who scored a comfortable win over Dan Carr in his last outing in March.

“It was nice to get back in the ring and to get back to winning ways last time out but I can’t wait for this fight because I’ve been doing brilliant in sparring and I feel much stronger.

“Podusov has won a couple of fights since he beat me and he’s picked up a title but I’m 100% confident I will put it right. The way I felt and the way I boxed against him last time wasn’t me.

“He beat me by one point and that was probably the best performance of his career. It was the worst performance of mine so if he can only beat my one point then he’s going to be in for a shock.”

The show will also feature another hometown fighter in 22-year-old Mason Cartwright, who has impressed in his three professional contests to date and has still to drop a point.

Fagan expects the atmosphere inside the 1,400-capacity venue to be one to savour and hopes the show will help put the town on the boxing map.

Fagan said: “The last time I boxed in Ellesmere Port was as an amateur in front of 100 people so I can’t wait.

“It’s going to be electric. I remember going to the Northgate Arena in Chester as a lad when Paul Lloyd was fighting and the place was bouncing.

“It’s great that we’ve been able to put on our own show and hopefully if everything goes to plan then we can look at doing three shows a year.

“Wirral CP has just had it’s first national schoolboy champion and that’s something Paul Butler or I couldn’t manage so it shows there’s a lot of talent in the town.”
