DEESIDE Ramblers are on course for promotion back to the top level of English hockey after a significant weekend in the race for the North League Premier Division title.
They took advantage of Oxton’s 2-1 loss at Bowdon to move top with a 4-1 win at Alderley Edge on Saturday.
The Ramblers – in what was their game in hand on previous pacesetters Oxton – then won 4-1 at home to third-placed Leeds Gryphons on Sunday to open up a potentially decisive five-point lead.
Relegation-threatened Alderley Edge devised a system to restrict Ali Ghazanfar’s influence.
It backfired, however, as Ghazanfar, Ibby Latif (2) and Andy Hayter fired Ramblers to a vital victory.
Ghazanfar (2), Hayter and Jonny Verity shared the strikes against Leeds.
Ramblers 3rds maintained their upturn in form with a 7-1 success at home to Northop Hall 2nds given to them by Piers Fielding (4), Phil Johnson, Will Hunt and Dave Jones.
Chester moved three points clear in North League Division Two (West) with back-to-back wins. The unbeaten leaders won 3-1 at home to Bebington on Saturday courtesy of Steve Edmonds and Tom Fairbairn strikes and an own goal. Mark Crooks and Simon Jones then fired Chester to a 2-0 win at Wigan on Sunday.
