A GYMNAST from Chester played her part as Great Britain returned from the Special Olympic World Summer Games with a major medal haul.

Kim Estebanez, who lives on Lache Lane, won two gold and two bronze to help her country finish with an incredible 187 medals at the massive Athens event.

The Crewe & Nantwich Gymnastics Club member also came desperately close to adding a third bronze in her all-round rhythmic gymnastics final.

The 26-year-old, who has Down’s syndrome, scored 24.011 points, but had to settle for fourth position after Ireland’s Una McGarry notched up 24.111.

Kim, accompanied by mum Linda and sister Cerys, will never forget her trip to Greece.

Linda, who coaches at the Crewe & Nantwich club and whose husband Joe is a long-serving Buckley Boys Gymnastics Club official, said: “Kim did really well. She came back shattered but having thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

“She was a bit nervous but the people of Greece went out of their way to make all the athletes feel very welcome.”

Kim was not the only athlete from the city competing at the World Summer Games, which are held every four years for sportsmen and women with intellectual disabilities.

Declan Kerry, from Upton, and unified partner Ashley Field, from Blacon, were in the GB unified football seven-a-side team which won silver.

Unified football is a programme designed to breakdown the social barriers between people with learning disabilities, called athletes, and those without, called unified partners.
