A GYMNASTICS club has won two coveted awards, underlining the amazing progress it has made in the last few years.

Ellesmere Port Club of Gymnastics was named club of the year at the Cheshire West and Chester Council Sports Awards, while coach Ron Bell collected the coach of the year crown.

The double win is a superb achievement for the club, which was established in 2008 and only moved into its fully equipped gymnastics centre – on the Rossmore Industrial Estate – in July of last year.

Both the club and Ron now go forward as the West Cheshire representatives for the main Cheshire & Warrington Sports Partnership Awards later this month.

Jody Bell, a club coach and daughter of Ron Bell, said: “Parents, gymnasts and coaches were made up with the result.

“We definitely feel like we have worked hard to achieve recognition for the club, achieving good results in competitions and helping to provide spaces so that more than 200 members can take part in gymnastics.”

The awards evening was held at Northwich Victoria FC. Both the club and Ron, who has coached gymnastics for more than 13 years, were shortlisted after being nominated for awards by members of the public.

Ellesmere Port Club of Gymnastics entered 13 young hopefuls into the Cheshire and Merseyside four-piece championships in Liverpool. The club came away with an impressive array of 22 medals and the county trophy in the pre-novice age category.

All of the gymnasts performed to a high standard, with some competing with moves they have never performed in competition before.
