IT is a fair bet that among the junior prize winners at Upton-by-Chester Golf Club this summer will be a Galletly.

Golfing triplets David, Matthew and Katie, 12, have all taken quickly to the game since being introduced to it by dad Gordon.

They are the first triplets to play at Upton in the club’s 74-year history.

David is showing particular promise having seen his handicap reduced from 36 to 16 in just three years.

He recently won the Joanne Morley Junior Challenge at Sale Golf Club and is the current holder of the club’s Bogey Cup and Bill Davies Trophy.

Proud mum Ann said: “It’s obviously far too soon to say, but if you asked David what he wanted to be he would say a professional golfer. He dreams of playing in the Ryder Cup.

“He used to play football but now he just wants to play golf. “He plays most days and is now eligible to play in the competitions with the men. He’s been playing a lot during the past few months in the Men’s Winter League.”

The youngster teamed up with older 16-year-old brother Jonathan, a 12-handicapper, to form part of the victorious West Cheshire and Borders League Shield side.

Sporty Katie, now down to a 39 handicap, juggles her time on the fairways with playing hockey and netball.

Like her three brothers, she is a pupil at Upton High and she plays most of her golf with a couple of other girl members.

Matthew’s success story is even more admirable as he has reduced his handicap down to 36 despite suffering from cerebral palsy.

“It affects his balance and he isn’t able to walk 18 holes so he uses an electric buggy to get round,” explained Ann.

Like Katie, he loves other sports too.

Later this month he heads over to Manchester to compete in an athletics championship for children with physical disabilities.

“He’s going to be taking part in the 100m, 400m and long jump. He’s got high hopes of getting a medal and we’re really proud of him,” added Ann.

In addition to the four children and their dad, the family, who live near the course in Upton, may soon be joined by another fellow member as Ann has plans to sign up and join the family fun.

The club’s handicap secretary, Lynn Lightfoot, added: “They are a delightful family and we are very lucky to have them as members.

“Katie, Matthew and David are the first triplets we’ve ever had at the club in our 74-year-old history.”
