A GOLFER is setting his sights on a scholarship in America after winning an amateur competition.

Anthony Dempsey, of Whitby, was the gross winner of the Wirral Open Golf Championship at Brackenwood.

The 19-year-old member of Sutton Hall Golf Club in Runcorn, has been playing golf for six years and has a handicap of four.

He said: “It was an awesome feeling. I’ve been playing pretty well lately, and it was good to get my name on the board in the clubhouse.”

Anthony, who attended Ellesmere Port Catholic High, was addicted to golf as soon as he picked up a club aged 13, playing his first round with a friend at Chester Golf Course.

He played at high school, before going to Preston to complete a golf studies course at Myerscough College.

Now he is eyeing up a move across the Atlantic.

“I'm hoping to get a scholarship to go to America,” he said. “I would play for the college and study golf alongside it.”
