JENNY Swallow has become a double national canoeing champion.

The Chester Sailing and Canoeing Club member took part in the National Marathon Championships in Reading and, in the K1 singles, Jenny won the under 16 event over eight miles. She became a double champion by teaming up with Caroline Rowlands to win the K2 U16 National Championship.

They were the most successful competitors from Cheshire and have been selected for the Great Britain junior sprint team to compete at the international regatta at Sobeka in Belgium next month.

In the over 35 event over 12 miles, Melvin Swallow struggled and was disappointed to finish seventh.

However, he is now in training for the veterans event to be held at the World Marathon Championships in France in September, where he hopes to defend the title he won in Australia last year.

In the Over 45 event, the Chester club's Roger Williams finished 13th while in the over 55 K1 section over four miles Bob Scholey finished 11th, Graham Bulmer 14th and Dave Madeley 15th.

In the over 35s K2 class, Melvin Swallow joined forces with Andy Kelly from Kendal and they finished third in a fiercely fought race where they were just pipped on the line for second place.

Divisional races were also held at Reading. In Division Five Roger Williams finished 11th, Victoria Swallow 15th, Bob Scholey 25th and Graham Bulmer 27th. In Division Seven Dave Madeley finished 25th.

* CSCC's Kim Dawson was part of the Great Britain team at the European Under 23 Championships which competed in the K4 500m event. They made the final and finished ninth.
