THE bad weather put paid to a host of local football fixtures – and it also wrecked Whitby High School’s big day.

The school’s under 13s girls team was due to play in the northern finals of the npower Football League Girls Cup last Tuesday.

Had they emerged victorious from the eight schools taking part on the day, they would have won the right to play at Wembley next month.

However, last week’s frost and snow meant that the tournament – due to be staged at Notts County FC – had to be postponed until Tuesday, February 28.

Many West Cheshire League matches fell victim to the bad weather on Saturday, but Vauxhall Motors’ clash at Cammell Laird Reserves survived. Goals from Mark Winsdale, Craig Carins and Steve Finlay gave the visitors a 3-2 win.

Ellesmere Port lost 2-0 at home to Newton while Willaston went down 1-0 at Southport Trinity.

Only two matches in the Ellesmere Port Sunday League survived.

Woodlands Athletic beat RJW Wolverham 10-1 in the Premier Division, with goals from L Benson (3), P Quilliam (3), P Barnett (2), K Morris and I Mayo. L Scott replied.

In the George Williamson Memorial Cup, Thorne Plumbing and Heating saw off Wirral Wanderers 6-0 with goals from G Davidson (3), J Sheppard, R McDowell and C Forester.
