Vauxhall Motors 2 Histon 0

SECOND-HALF strikes by Karl Noon and Andy Nicholas ensured Motors claimed all three points at Rivacre Park.

Histon desperately needed something out of the game to ease their relegation fears, but they rarely threatened in front of goal.

The away side did start brightly, with Lewis Taafe going close on 12 minutes when he beat Danny Fearnehough on the left. However, his cross-come-shot whistled past the left hand post.

On 22 minutes, Levi Porter set up Jim Stevenson but his 25-yard effort went just over the crossbar.

The breakthrough goal almost arrived on 28 minutes. Motors winger Craig Mahon crossed from the right to Louis Moss, whose goalbound effort was deflected behind for a corner. Mike Burns floated in the subsequent flag kick and Andy Nicholas rose unchallenged but somehow put his header over the crossbar from close range.

Just three minutes after the interval, Motors took the lead when Noon beat the offside trap on the left wing then had time to calmly drill the ball through keeper Calum Kitscha’s legs from a tight angle.

Histon’s best chance of the game came on the hour when a deep diagonal ball from the left was hit first time on the volley by Taafe, only for Jones to pull off a fine save and avert the danger.

With just six minutes remaining, Motors doubled their advantage when Burns whipped in a dangerous free kick from the right and Nicholas rattled the post with a header.

However, the defender reacted quickest and slotted home the rebound from close range.

Vauxhall: Jones, Fearnehough, Wainwright, Hannigan, Nicholas, Moss (Noone 64), Mahon, Burns, Rutter, Stott (Anoruo 64), Noon (Kocsis 90). Subs: Martindale, Ellison.

Motors, who moved up to 10th in the Blue Square Bet North table as a result of Saturday’s win over Histon, have only two more games to go.

On Saturday they travel to Gainsborough Trinity. They complete the campaign with a home clash against Harrogate Town on Saturday week. Both matches kick off at 3pm.
