A FOOTBALLER with links to Ellesmere Port has signed for Championship high flyers Crystal Palace.

Antonio Pedroza Whitham, who was born locally but grew up in Mexico, was strongly linked with a switch to Premiership giants Tottenham Hotspur all summer.

After the Spurs move fell through, the 20-year-old joined the Eagles last week, signing from Mexican club Jaguares for an undisclosed fee.

Pedroza Whitlam, whose mother Katrina lives in Thornton-le-Moors and works at the Asda store in Ellesmere Port, said: “I feel very happy to be here. It’s really nice to have a chance to prove myself in English football.

“I’m happy to be at a great club.”

Pedroza Whitlam was born in Chester. While mum Katrina is English, his father is Mexican.

His family left the UK and relocated to Mexico when he was a small boy, but Katrina has since returned home.

The predatory striker, who has been likened to Manchester United’s Mexican star Javier Hernandez, penned a three-year contract with the Eagles before transfer deadline day.

His transfer was announced soon after, once his international clearance came through.

Manager Dougie Freedman said: “For a very small fee we have got a great prospect.”
