Matty Fagan is preparing to become a dad for the first time having secured the biggest win of his boxing career to date.

The Ellesmere Port lightweight outpointed Adam Kettleborough over 10 rounds in front of his home crowd at Cheshire Oaks Arena on Saturday night in an English title eliminator.

It all means the future is looking bright for Fagan, whose partner is due to give birth to their son in October, as he is now in line for a shot at the vacant belt.

Successive victories have put Fagan’s career back on track after a surprise defeat to Latvian Andrei Podusov in October 2014 and the 27-year-old has high hopes for his future inside and outside the ring.

"I’m in a good place now because I’ve picked my boxing up and we’ve got our first baby on the way,” said Fagan, who was boxing over 10 rounds for the first time. I’m 27 now so I’m at a good age and everything is going really well for me.

"It was a close fight but I felt really comfortable in there. I was a bit anxious because of the 10 rounds. It wasn’t so much whether I’d be fit enough, but it was in the back of my mind.

"To be honest, when we got to the 10th round I felt absolutely fine. We’re fit lads and I’ll have couple of days off and get straight back in the gym. I think I’m going to be boxing again around the time the baby’s due.

"We’ll see what happens next but I might be able to go straight for the vacant title, or I might have to have a final eliminator or go for the Central Area title.

"The English title is the plan now and whatever I need to do I’ll be ready. Scott Cardle vacated the belt because he won the British title and I’m not saying I’m going to do that but it shows what can happen."

Fagan topped the bill at the town’s new arena and promoter Jay McRory from Longshots Sports plans to put on another show in October having been pleased with the response.

Fellow Ellesmere Port fighter Mason Cartwright, 22, extended his unbeaten record to four fights with a win over former English light middleweight title challenger Ryan Toms.

Fagan said: "Mason did really well and we both stepped up because he beat the best he’s been in with so far and so did I.

"I sold 250 tickets for the show and it was enough of a success for the promoter."

Fagan's professional record now reads eight wins and one defeat from nine contests.
