A CRACKING day's sport is in prospect at one of Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse's top meetings of the year on Saturday.

As well as high-class feature races over hurdles and fences, there is the mouth-watering prospect of Cheshire-owned Iris's Gift running in the Bright Future Novices' Chase.

After a victorious seasonal debut at Market Rasen in Lincolnshire, the horse -which could be destined for the Cheltenham Gold Cup -will provide spectators with a treat if he runs for Nantwich owner Robert Lester. The cameras of Channel 4 television will be at Bangor-on-Dee to capture the main events.

The major race is the £20,000 Totesport6 Handicap Chase over an extended three miles. Former Scottish Grand National winner Gingembre is among the entries, as is Ginger McCain's Ebony Light. A competitive field of runners is highly likely for the valuable prize money on offer.

The supporting hurdle race - the Numark Handicap Hurdle, worth £15,000 - has also attracted the Cholmondeley trainer's attention, and Flame Phoenix is set to be his representative.

Racegoers will also be able to keep an eye on racecourse televisions where they are likely to see Ginger McCain's 2004 Grand National hero Amberleigh House making his seasonal debut at Wales' second racecourse at Chepstow.

It's a rare occurrence for both racecourses to be racing on the same day. One thing is certain - the world of jump racing will be concentrating fully on The Principality on Saturday.

The first race at Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse on Saturday is at 2.20pm. Admission to the Course Enclosure is £7, while the Paddock Enclosure is £14. More information is available on web site www.BangorOnDeeRaces.co.uk or contact the racecourse on 01978 780323.
