ATHLETICS: WEST CHESHIRE AC will be presented with two prestigious awards this weekend.

The Chester and Ellesmere Port-based club has been named by UK Athletics as the North West Junior Athletics Club of the Year.

And club vice-president John Driscoll will be honoured by UK Athletics as the recipient of the North West Athletics Club Volunteer of the Year Award.

John is a Grade Two field athletics official and he has officiated at many cross-country, road running, and sportshall athletics competitions during his time in the sport.

But West Cheshire AC were anxious to nominate him for the work he has achieved in helping the Chester and Ellesmere Port area establish a track and field athletics complex at Stanney Oaks Leisure Centre.

John and representatives of West Cheshire AC will be presented with the two awards at Sport City in Manchester, on Sunday.

Daisy Flynn-Piercy posted a new 60m sprint best at the AAA Indoor Under 15 girls' Championships at Birmingham's National Indoor Arena.

The West Cheshire AC teenager finished second in her heat with a new best time of 8.29 seconds and then posted 8.25secs for fifth spot in her semi-final. Daisy just missed out on a place in the final by a fraction of a second despite

finishing joint eighth fastest of the 24 sprinters taking part.

Mary Radford, representing West Cheshire AC, secured third in the Over 55 ladies age group at the final round of the North Wales Cross Country League, finishing 59th at Oswestry over the weekend.

West Cheshire AC debutant Andrew Hetherington finished 70th in the men's race on a 5.75 miles course. He was joined by West Cheshire team members Brian Hastings (80th), and Mike Lamb (114th).

Georgina Wright took fourth at a minor girls' Inter-Counties Schools' Cross-Country Race at Frodsham's Castle Park.

She was joined by three other West Cheshire AC members including Gemma Mayled who finished 29th.

Charlotte Roach posted seventh place in the intermediate girls race, and Rebecca Grimes secured 21st spot in the junior girls race.

West Cheshire AC will be represented by five age group teams at the North West Sportshall League Finals at Kingsway Leisure Centre, Widnes, this Sunday.

The club's U11 boys finished sixth after four league rounds; West Cheshire's U13 girls clinched sixth spot; and the U13 boys finished first.

West Cheshire's U15 girls secured third spot, and the club's U15 boys topped their age-group league table.
