CROSS-COUNTRY runners were out in force at Stanney in Ellesmere Port on Saturday for the final round of a popular race series.

The Essar West Cheshire AC schools cross country competition takes place on selected weekends throughout the winter and features athletes from the Chester, Ellesmere Port, Frodsham and Helsby areas.

On Saturday, Sonny Dean (Helsby Hillside) won the Year 6 boys race. He clocked five minutes and 18 seconds and finished ahead of runner-up Paul Morrison (Our Lady’s) in 5:27, and third-placed Sion Roberts (Tarporley) in 5:37.

Waverton’s Laura Roberts posted 5:55 for victory in the Year 6 girls race, just eight seconds clear of runner-up Ellie Finn (Utkinton), with Millie Riddick (Newton) third in 6:04.

Tarporley’s Rebecca Kenworthy and Anna Crayston won the Year 3 and Year 5 girls races respectively, with Kenworthy finishing ahead of Imogen Pughe (Childer Thornton) and Klara Webster (Waverton), and Crayston finishing in front of Meadow’s Hollie Jones and Iris Threlfall (Eaton).

Waverton’s Henry Robinson won the Year 3 boys race ahead of Millview duo William Sutcliffe and Joel Jones, while Lottie Wood (Kingsley) took victory in the Year 4 girls race ahead of Bunbury’s Meg Illingworth and Tarporley’s Izzy Heath.

Saighton’s Isaac Tait triumphed in the Year 4 boys race ahead of Eaton pair James Cook and Lewis Gray, while Wooton’s Harry Rhead won the Year 5 boys race ahead of Harvey Tegg (Childer Thornton) and Tarvin’s Adam Howe, and Rory Willson claimed the Year 7 boys race win.

Fixtures this weekend include the Liverpool and District Cross Country Championships at Clare Gardens, Liverpool, on Sunday and the Manchester Area Cross Country League, at Woodbank Park, Stockport, also this Sunday.
