THE weather was the only winner on Saturday as cricket matches across the region fell victim to the rain.

Both Groves and Ellesmere Port were frustrated by the wet conditions.

Only a handful of overs were bowled in Groves’ Meller Braggins League encounter at Disley. The hosts were 13-0 when rain brought a premature halt to proceedings.

Ellesmere Port’s match against Glazebury in the Cheshire Alliance was also abandoned.

Both sides will be hoping for better weather this weekend.

Groves entertain Division Three high-flyers Bunbury while Ellesmere Port are also at home, hosting Langley.

Former England Test players will head to Neston CC next week for a fundraising charity match.

John Emburey, Derek Randall and John Lever will all play in the match at Parkgate on Thursday, July 28.

The game, which is preceded by a lunch for Merseyside businesses in the club’s Cranston Suite, will raise funds for North West Cancer Research Fund.

It is the third year Old England have taken a team to Parkgate to play a Neston CC Select XI and to support the work of the charity.
