THE Groves managed to lift themselves out of the bottom two with a dramatic home victory over Meller Braggins League Division Three leaders Bunbury.

Despite a poor return of 124ao (Tony King 48), the Ellesmere Port hosts put on an excellent fielding display to snatch the victory.

Bunbury needed just three runs for victory before Robin Williams was caught by captain Mike Garvey in a nail-biting finish.

Garvey said: “What a game! I was more than a little disappointed with how we collapsed after recovering to a good position and at this level you won’t win many games only scoring 124.

“There were a few times when I thought that we might just not have enough to get over the line, especially during their last wicket partnership, but we kept digging deep and to win the way we did was special.”

After a superb fielding display, Groves needed just one wicket with Bunbury on 91-9 (Damian Walters (3-7).

The away side’s final wicket partnership fought back before Garvey’s catch from Tom Garrett’s bowl sealed the victory.

This Saturday, The Groves are away to Chester County Officers.
