HOWIE Mainwaring stormed to an impressive second-place finish at Cadwell Park - before crashing out of his next race in spectacular fashion.

Lining up in the British Superbike Championship in front of a 40,000 crowd, the Frodsham rider claimed second spot in the Privateers Cup section and 16th overall in his first race.

But disaster struck in his second outing as Howie failed to control his landing from the mountain jump and was thrown from his Mark Johns-backed Honda Fireblade.

The 20-year-old, who found the worsening weather conditions difficult to come to terms with, escaped relatively unscathed - with injuries to two of his left-hand fingers.

It was a busy weekend for Howie, who finished 11th in the National Superstock Championship aboard his Krystal Racing Yamaha R1.

Howie returns to action at Silverstone on September 15.

* The Cadwell meeting was struck by tragedy during the Supersport race when teenager Ashley Martin, 18, was killed after losing control of his machine at the Gooseneck.
