A BIG turnout at a fledgling riding club's first annual presentation night proved it is a hit with young and old.

The Oakhanger Riding Club, near Crewe, is just 12 months old but more than 160 people turned up to its first prizegiving ceremony, at Crewe Hall.

Popular in part due to its accommodating policy towards people who do not own a horse or pony, it has members as young as three-year-old Alicia Boyd, while others are in their 60s.

Chairperson and instructor Corinne Collins said: 'It was a brilliant night. I am delighted that we have over 80 members after just 12 months.

'I always wanted to start up a riding club and there seems to fewer around these days. We have great facilities and members who don't have their own horse are welcome. Thanks to our sponsors Grenson Motors of Crewe.'

The club is based at Oakhanger Equestrian Centre, Holmshaw Lane, which has been established for more than 50 years.

Members enjoy regular practice sessions, as well as taking part in competitions in Oakhanger and at venues across the country.

Riders were awarded points throughout their first season of competition, which helped decide who received the awards.

In show jumping Champion-ships, sisters Chloe and Martha Newall stole the show by sharing the Hotshot Championship and Performance of 2006 title.

The Junior Starter stakes went to Adam Stanley, Catherine Hannant took the Junior Open Championship, Jane Howie won the Senior Championship, with her son Alistair earning the Reserve Champion accolade.

Six-year-old Lucy Berridge dominated the showing classes, winning six championships through the campaign with her pony Private Benjamin.

Jade Callahan was recognised for winning four championships with her grey gelding called Will, while Diane Rorbach, Vicky Townsend, Anne Bridgett, Zoe Lukowski, Jason Williams and Alison Hodson were also rewarded for their success. Helper of the year went to Zara Mabutt.
