SPEEDWAY: STOKE Potters' 2004 team building plans moved on this week with the signings of Paul Pickering and Paul Clews, the latter joining on loan from Reading, writes NEIL EVANS.

Stoke promoter Dave Tattum was pleased enough with his double signings, saying: 'I'm sure most of the supporters will see the signing of Paul Pickering as an early Christmas present and we're delighted that he will be back for a seventh consecutive season.

'I got interested in Clews as soon as I heard he might be available. He has a decent background and should do a good job for us at number two in the line-up.'

Clews added: 'I have always liked the Stoke track and I think this will be a good move for me. I have been at Reading for about five years and the change will give me a fresh challenge, which is just what I need.'

Pickering was equally upbeat, saying: 'I needed to clarify a few things with Dave (Tattum) and once that was sorted we agreed terms fairly quickly.

'I am settled here with Stoke and no-one should doubt my loyalties or commitment.'

Tattum hopes to add another name to the team sheet before Christmas.
