A total of 298 youngsters competed in the second round of the West Cheshire AC Schools Cross Country Race Series.

Pupils from across the district braved icy temperatures to complete the latest fixture in the four-round series held at Stanney Oaks.

Carys Roberts (Tarporley) won the Year 5 girls race in 5:44, ahead of runner-up Martha Willetts (Tarvin) in 5:58, and third-placed Scarlett Ross (Tarporley) in 6:01.

Zak Dean (5:21) and Nathan Robinson (5:31) made it a one-two for Helsby Hillside in the Year 5 boys race ahead of third-placed Fergus Garland (Childer Thornton) who posted 5:32.

Holly Weedall (Cuddington) won the Year 5/6 girls race in 5:07, ahead of Childer Thornton duo Imogen Pughe (5:31) and Lara Battersby (5:34) who finished second and third.

Ted Bolton (Christleton) posted a winning time of 5:10 in the Year 6 boys race, two seconds clear of runner-up William Sutcliffe (Mill View), while Thomas Doherty (The Firs) was third in 5:22.

Sisters Lottie and Jessica Wood from Helsby High finished first and second respectively in the Year 7 girls race with times of 9:21 and 9:54.

Tarporley’s Dylan Bugg won the Year 7 boys race in 8:12, ahead of Upton duo Matthew Holtom (8:15) and Ethan Dawson (8:24) who were second and third.

Mimi Jayaram (Abbey Gate) won the Year 8 girls race in 14:37, while Jack Hollins (Upton) was the Year 8 boys winner in 12:09, ahead of second-placed Dylan Moore (Christleton) in 12:41, and Neston’s Aaron Scott who was third in 13:55.

Eleanor Williams (King’s) won the Year 3 girls race in a time of 3:25, ahead of runner-up Ella Hims (Childer Thornton) in 3:34, and third-placed Cerys Rowlands (Woodlands) in 3:44.

Henry Copelin (Eaton) won the Year 4 boys race in 3:25, ahead of second-placed Joshua Oates (Newton) in 3:35, and Joseph Ireland (Mill View) who was third in 3:36.

Jessica Lark (Upton Heath) clocked 3:29 to win the Year 4 girls race, ahead of Sara Pearson (Frodsham Manor House) who was second in 3:41, and third-placed Darcey Fay (Helsby Hillside) in 3:43.

Ben Grantham (Bishop Wilson) posted 3:14 to win the Year 4 boys race, just one second in front of Reece Munro (Eccleston), while Cameron Tapley (Delamere) was third in 3:18.

Rowing

Queen's Park High School students travelled to Northwich Rowing Club to compete at their head race on the River Weaver.

The first division was cancelled for all under 15 single scullers due to extreme winds and dangerous river conditions.

But as the day progressed, the weather improved and all other combinations and crews were allowed to race over the 2,350m course.

There were wins for Queen’s Park rowers in the WJ17 double category for Emily Cox and Amy Williamson, and in the WJ16 double for Rona Fishburn and Fi Weir.

The WJ16 quad of Eve Finlay, Rona Fishburn, Eve Lawlor and Fi Weir achieved second place against a slightly faster crew from Trentham Boat Club.

The club will now look forward to the next competition at Liverpool Victoria Rowing Club in December.

Running

A nine-strong squad of hardy Tattenhall Runners braved rough weather to join about 3,500 others at the Conway Half Marathon on Sunday.

Andy Sudlow led them home in 33rd over all, in 1hr 22minz 15secs.

Rob Arden (1:24:43) was not far behind in 51st, while the others in action were: Rod Jones (1:42:35), Charlie Butterfield (1:44:18), Martin Durrant (1:44:48), Lance Boseley (1:49:38), Neirin Roberts (1:55:09), Rob Webster (1:53:39) and Laura Ashford (2:01:59).

Meanwhile, Sunday saw 10 Ellesmere Port Running Club members take part in the Cross Country League at Beacon Park in Skelmersdale.

The two-lap, 4.4 mile race was run in muddy conditions and, in the ladies race, first home for the club and also the winning lady was Carol Parsons.

Parsons’ triumph continued her fine form having won her last three league outings.

Parsons was followed by Emma Baker (16th), Danni Ebbrell (25th), Sara Atkinson (26th), Helen Johnson (29th) and Helen Lester (70th).

In the men’s race Max Woollard came home in 33rd position followed by Ian Atkinson (99th), Andrew Blair (158th), Dave Roberts (173rd).

A total of 19 club members took part in the Conway Half Marathon on Sunday.

The start and finish was on the quayside in front of the castle with the route then taking them out to Deganwy Beach and up and around the Great Orme.

First home for the club and finishing 20th overall was Dave Bennett (01:18:54), who was followed by Jonathan Cole (01:28:20), Steve Edwards (01:38:43 PB)David Nalder (01:41:19), Patrick Cooney (01:43:13 PB), Ian Kirby (01:47:54), Kevin Curtis (01:48:36) and Phillip Proctor (02:03:18).

Kelly Lavender-Smith,Gemma Edwards, Sue Ledsom , Anne Kirby, Julie Winstanley, Rachel Beddows, Sharon Fraser, Elaine Hulse, Carolyn Bott, Francesca Davies, Carmel Barnett were the Port ladies across the line.

Hockey

Deeside Ramblers shared the spoils in a 10-goal thriller at the weekend.

They drew 5-5 with Wakefield in the National League after fighting back from 3-1 down and then leading 5-4 before being pegged back at the death.

Ed Peel bagged a hat-trick and Chris Barber and Tom Warburton were also on target.

Deeside under 18 defeated Neston 3-1 in the second round of the National Knockout. In a feisty match, Neston picked up seven cards as goals from Tommy Hill (2) and Will Dodd-Moore sent Ramblers through.
