Chester Amazons have booked their place in the final of the National Volleyball Shield.

The Division Three North side earned their spot after they saw off Division Two side North Riding Eagles at Whitby High School on Sunday.

The Amazons claimed a 3-1 triumph over their Yorkshire visitors and will now play Ashcombe Dorking at the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering on March 28.

Chester started their semi-final encounter well with six winning serves from Becca Kitchen creating a solid platform. They maintained the service pressure throughout the opening set to close it out 25-16.

The second set saw a role reversal and North Riding went 5-2 and 8-3 up. Chester re-grouped and fought back point-by-point to be 14-16 down at the second technical time out.

Kristina Podholicka then served Chester to a 20-18 lead before positive attacking play from Liz Quinn and Michelle Chan saw the set won 25-22.

That commanding position position soon evaporated as the Amazons went 5-0 down at the start of the third as concentration levels dipped and errors crept in. Despite a spirited response Chester could not stem the tide and the set was lost 25-16.

Coach Lenny Barry asked the players to pull together and return to the game plan that had been successful at the start and they responded with good serving from Jana de Brandt and Vanessa Barry setting the scene as the Amazons moved from 8-8 to a commanding 20-15 lead.

North Riding fought back but Chester’s resolve was not to be weakened and they went on to win the set 25-19 to take the match and secure their place in the showpiece final later this month.
