A TALENTED teenager has continued his rapid progress in the sport after being selected to represent Great Britain at this year’s Under 23s and Junior European Slalom Championships.

David Bain, 17, of Great Boughton, sealed his place to the Bosnia event by wowing national team bosses during a three-race selection series.

Bain’s near flawless displays in Bala and Nottingham brought him two first-placed finishes and his spot in the GB squad before he finished runner-up in the final race in Scotland.

“It’s a big achievement for me to make the GB squad two years in a row and I’m delighted,” said David, a pupil at Bishops’ High School.

“Last year I made the squad a year earlier than what I expected so I will be hoping to build upon what I achieved then.”

Following his selection to the Euros, which will be held in Bosnia’s second largest city Banja Luka in July, David has set his sights on breaking into the GB senior set-up.

He is already a reserve for the U23s squad and last weekend impressed at the big senior selection races at Lee Valley White Water Centre, the venue of the 2012 Olympic Games canoe slalom competition.

“Training has been going really well and although I wasn’t expecting to get a wildcard selection for the seniors, I was hopeful that my results were good enough,” said David, who juggles his training with studying for his AS Level exams.

“But my priority is the European Championships and I am really looking forward to it.

“The ultimate aim for me is to see just how far I can go in the sport and where my talent will take me, whether it be European Championships at senior level or maybe even the Olympics.”
