THE curtain came down on another successful season for Vauxhall Motors ABC at the club’s annual presentation night.

About 150 boxers and their families gathered at Vauxhall Motors Sports and Social Club for the prize-giving ceremony.

The night saw Vauxhall officially receive their Clubmark award from Sport England.

Clubmark is a national quality accreditation scheme for clubs with junior sections – and Vauxhall are the first boxing club in Cheshire to earn Clubmark status.

Chairman Peter Phelan said: “I’m over the moon.

“It shows we’re heading in the right direction and I’d like to give a special mention to all the coaches in the gym.”

A special presentation was made to middleweight Mike Phillips, a former ABA semi-finalist who has reached the amateur retirement age of 34 and will now making the move into coaching.

The Peter Titherington Trophy, named after one of the Ellesmere Port club’s founder members and awarded to the best ‘clubman’ of the season, went to Carl McLeod.

Chairman Phelan said: “The boy has acted as a genuine club member all year. He’s always been there.”

The Jack Thornley Trophy, named in honour of a late club sponsor, went to Jake Batchelor, who turned in some tremendous performances this year.

He was unlucky to lose a fight on the club’s tour to Denmark but impressed coaches with his tenacity and never-say-die spirit.

Other awards went to: Kieran McGough (best prospect, beginners category), Connor Leatt (most improved schoolboy), James Delaney (best schoolboy prospect), Ethan Bibby (schoolboy of the year), Nathan Cartwright (best junior), Nathan Morgan (most improved junior), Wayne Adeniyi (best senior prospect), Myles Tunstall (most improved senior), Paul Butler (boxer of the year).
