THERE were eight high-quality bouts at the latest Wirral Community Police ABC show, staged at Vauxhall Sports and Social Club.

Schoolboy Jack Tidd, boxing for the host club, got the ball rolling with a unanimous points victory over Shotton’s Steve Lee Jack.

He took the initiative from the first bell and boxed on the front foot, controlling the bout behind a stiff jab.

In another schoolboy bout, Sonny Connolly (Wirral) came out like a buzzsaw, looking to blow Deva Police ABC’s Martin McDonough out of the ring. But Martin came back into it in the second round and looked on top at the final bell, with Connolly feeling the pace after his fast start.

The majority decision in Connolly’s favour looked a little fortunate.

Wirral junior Jack McEvoy and Higherside’s Jon Walsh showed potential in three, two-minute rounds, with McEvoy receiving a unanimous points verdict.

Jack Kelly made his debut at senior level and ground out a hard-earned unanimous points victory over James Key (Ludlow), while fellow senior fighter Will Frewtrell lost out to Jake Morton from Kirkby on a unanimous points decision.

Cruiserweight bruiser Doug McDonough, Martin’s elder bother, recorded a points verdict over Luke Wilkinson (Higherside). Both men went at it hell for leather, but the Wirral boxer showed the greater strength on the inside. He was given a majority points decision.

Matty Robb, another Kirkby boxer on the bill, set about Wirral’s Tom Shiels from the first bell.

Shiels started to have some success with the jab in the second round, setting up a tense final round.

Robb started to tire due to his earlier exertions and Shiels went on to secure a majority verdict.

In the evening’s top-of-the bill fight, home fighter Matty Fagan took on Kris Davy (Spire) over three, three-minute rounds.

The taller Davy made full use of his reach advantages early on with Fagan trying to close down the space.

The second round saw Fagan in the ascendancy, working almost exclusively to the body with Davy unable to keep him at bay.

Fagan dominated the third and although Davy refused to wilt under the pressure, the Wirral man took a unanimous points verdict.
