WIDNES & District Bowls Association didn't mind having Moss on the green in the climax to an action-packed week of knockout bowls.

Alan Moss won the league's Division One Merit with a 21-16 defeat of Dave Eaton.

The eventual champion had earlier beaten former winner Peter Jones 21-9.

In the other last-four tie, Brian Hough had the early advantage against Dave Eaton.

However, Hough was eventually undone 21-7 by Eaton bowling along the edge of the green.

The final started well for Eaton who led 13-8 early on before Moss got into a groove again.

Five twos on a similar mark to the one which had accounted for Jones gave Moss an advantage he never looked like relinquishing.

The climax to the Merit Competitions in the two lower divisions also took place at Smithy Manor.

The Division Three semi-finals had Gary Elliott, in his first Widnes league year, beating seasoned Fred Diamond 21-14.

Stan Morris, another newcomer, overcame Sid Radford 21-16.

In the final, Elliott built a 21-8 advantage before Morris scored six chalks without reply.

Elliott, however, eventually found an excellent wood which he coupled to win the game 21-14.

Division Two produced the most exciting finishes in both semi-finals and final.

Pre-tournament favourite Ray Dutton was always struggling against last-four opponent Peter Bannister and had to keep coming from behind.

Indeed, with the score 20-16 to Bannister, Dutton again started to pull back and, by the 30th end, he had reduced the deficit to just one chalk.

He then led a beautiful wood and coupled it up to be lying game only for Bannister to produce a matchwinner with his final wood.

John Lamb won a similar encounter against Alan Cross.

Lamb trailed 18-16 before produced some fine woods to lead 19-18.

Cross was not finished and regained the advantage before Lamb finished off with two at the next.

The final proved just as tight and with an equally dramatic finish.

After 27 ends, Lamb led 19-16 but Bannister conjured up two quality ends to level.

At the next end, with Peter lying two within less than a foot of the jack, Lamb bowled the wood of his life for a one-point lead.

Deflated Bannister never threatened Lamb's lead on the final end.
