MOTOR SPORT: A WINSFORD businessman has returned to the racetracks after a gap of almost 20 years.

Bob Trotter, who runs double glazing firm Select Windows, was a regular at race circuits during the 1970s and 1980s, competing in historic series.

But Bob began to miss the thrills and spills of battling it out at venues such as Oulton Park and is back at the wheel in the newly-formed 70s Saloon Series.

'I decided to take up racing again because life's too short, really. I used to compete in the special series but gave up due to a lack of time and money.

'When I saw that one of the clubs was organising a new series for 1970s saloons, I decided it was up my street. I've already raced at Brands Hatch and Silverstone this year and I was back at Oulton Park over the August Bank Holiday, which was great.

'I sampled a bit of success in my previous spell racing and won a few races at Oulton Park. I'm in my fifties now but am still managing to compete.' With the new series very much in its infancy, Bob is competing alongside the Historic Road Sports Championship. 'I'm competing in a Ford Escort RS 2000, 1977 vintage. It was a road car until six months ago but we've converted it into a racing car by adding a roll cage, fire extinguisher and other safety features.

'The series is competitive and I seem to have settled into the middle of the pack.'

But although he still enjoys the competitive aspect, Bob stresses the main name of the game is fun.

He said: 'I've always retained my love of motorsport and the reason I'm competing is because I enjoy it. The guys out in our class are not trying to become the next Michael Schumacher. There is good camaraderie in the paddock and all the lads competing are just doing it for the sport.'
