ANGLING: ELLESMERE Port angler Mike Beaumont clinched a weekend double in open matches.

He was top in the Northwich AA match on the Weaver at Hartford on Saturday with four tench up to 3lbs and some roach for a total of 14lbs 12oz, and the following day he led the field in the Chester Tackle Locker match on the Golden Nook length of the SU Canal at Waverton, with 4-7-7 of roach and skimmers using the pole and bloodworm.

North West Flyfishers cast their lines at the Meadow Fishery in a four-fish contest and Brian Harvey took 4-7-0 of rainbows to beat Charlie Mitchell, who had 8-8-0 of rainbows and Jonathan Moore with 8-6-0. The top fish was a 3-4-0 rainbow which fell to Ron Powell.

John Bristow was top rod in the Manley AC feathers match at Old Hall Farm with a 6-2-0 mixture of roach, rudd and carp. Mark Davies had 5lbs of carp and Billy Bristow took a 3-8-0 mixture.

Ron Evans was top of only two weighers in the Grosvenor Estates AC match on a private pool with 1-8-0 of chub, roach and dace. John Mort had 1-4-0 of dace.

Kevin Thornton took the honours in the Airbus, Broughton AC match at Bala lake with 5-12-4 of roach using ledgered red maggot, including a 1-14-8 fish. Scott Williams had 3-7-0 of roach and grayling.

Victory in the Castrol SAC match out of Port Dinorwic went to Morgan Jones with a 7lbs cod taken with lugworm. Paul Collins was next with a 5lbs cod and John Kermode had a 4-8-0 cod.

There is a tight finish in prospect in the Wirral Winter League following the penultimate match on the SU Canal at Wardle. Gary Green, of Dick Cleggs, took a 4-1-0 mixture of skimmers and roach to beat Frank Cooke, of Willaston Black, who had a 2-15-10 mixed bag. Ben Lloyd, of Eldonians, was third with 2-14-8.

Dick Cleggs won with 47 points ahead of Willaston Red and Dockers Red with 45 points. Willaston Red and Birkenhead Centre A are in joint first place with 213 points, with Dick Cleggs on 201.

The Bampton brothers battled it out in the Greyhound, Saughall AC Winter League match on the SU Canal at Croughton. Dave won with 4-3-0 of small fish with Steve second, taking 2-11-0, and Stuart Lennon third with 2-4-0.

Steve Bridson claimed top spot in the Ermine AC match on the Red Lion length of the Weaver with 2-4-4 of small roach, with Malcolm Dawes second with 1-14-6 ahead of Dave Black with 1-7-4.

A brace of common carp won the Lobol AC match for Frank Hughes, who put 13-2-0 on the scales. Runner-up was Sid Robinson with 7-14-0 with Peter Cooke third with 5-4-8.

Frank Flavell was a clear winner of the Ellesmere Port British Legion AC match on the Red Lion length of the Weaver with 7-10-0 of roach and perch.

Andy Fletcher had 3lbs to confirm his club champion title. Joe Greaves and Brian Wadsworth were joint third with 2-3-0.

Jeff Williams led the Rake and Pikel AC match on the marina length of the Weaver with a roach-based 10-12-0. Jimmy Page was next with 8-3-0 of roach and skimmers and Sam Griffiths had 7-4-0.

Steve Boyd won the Burton Mere Fishery midweek open with 21-14-0 of carp and skim-mers, ahead of Mickey Woods with 11-10-0 of skimmers and Ron Hullock with 9-15-8 of carp and skimmers.

The Sunday match went to James Declouet with a 9-2-0 mixture from Dave Lawrence's 6-13-0 carp and barbel mix and Steve Gerrard with 5-11-8 of skimmers.

Ellesmere Port members were prominent in the Iceland Foods Deeside AC match at Mouldsworth Mere. Billy Bristow won with 2-8-0 of roach and perch from John Dodd, with a 1-4-0 hybrid in his 1-10-0, and Carl Jones who had 1-4-0 of silver fish.

Ian Jones posted the top weight in the Royal Mail, Chester AC match on the Weaver's meadow island length with 4-8-0 of roach. Mike Walsh had 3-13-0 of perch and roach and Stan Williams 2-8-0.

Dennis Bailey was in the frame in two open matches on the Red Lion length of the Weaver.

He won his section in the Tuesday pensioners' match with 9-9-0 of roach and the next day he was second in the allcomers' match with 10lbs of roach.

Victory in the Tarvin Sands' AC Tuesday match at Cheshire Fishery, Tattenhall, went to Shaun Sandham with 25-4-0 of small carp from Martin Holding with 22-14-0. The Thursday match went to Les Picken with 20-12-0 of ghost carp from Wendy Locker with 19-12-0 of ghost carp and skimmers and Martin Holding with 17-12-0 of carp.

FISHERIES REPORTS Cheshire: Arthur Oldham, of Ellesmere Port, coaxed a 10-7-0 rainbow to a damsel-fly nymph.

Forest Hill: Roy Greenwood, of Neston, fished worm to take a 2-15-12 rainbow.

Grove: The fishery is closed until March 1. Harthill: The fishery is closed until March 1.

Lake Hill: Tony McGibbon, of Chester, took the top fish of the week, an 11-8-0 rainbow using ledgered worm.

Dearnford Hall: John Calder, of Chester, lifted their best fish of the week, a 9-2-0 rainbow to a cat's whisker. Ian Hart, of Ellesmere Port, coaxed the best brownie of the week, a 4-6-0 fish to a brown leech, and Vince Green, of Ellesmere Port, netted 32 fish, the best an 8-3-0 rainbow, using fritz or blob lures. There is an open match on Sunday, meeting at the lodge. The charge will be the cost of a day ticket.
