PERO Cameron, the former captain of the Cheshire Jets and member of the historic ‘Jetwash’ team in 2002, has been honoured by the Queen.

The 37-year-old was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit – the equivalent to an MBE in the United Kingdom – for his services to basketball.

Having also been given the role of assistant coach of the Tall Blacks, New Zealand’s national basketball side, it has been a week of great celebration for Cameron.

After a playing career of 18 years, both in the northern and southern hemispheres, the honour joins a long list of achievements by the Maori forward.

As well as helping the Jets through the most successful period in their history, Cameron also led his country to fourth place in the 2003 FIBA World Championships, and in doing so he was named as the only non-NBA player to make the all-tournament team.

This was followed by a silver medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. He was also a part of two Olympic teams in 2000 and 2004.

He now juggles three roles, as Tall Blacks assisant coach, head coach of New Zealand NBL’s Wellington Saints and also assistant of Australian NBL side Gold Coast Blaze.
