One of the greatest coaches in British Basketball League history has been recruited to aid Cheshire Phoenix’s push for silverware next season.

Robbie Peers, who won every honour in the BBL when he was in charge of the Northgate Arena club 11 years ago, has returned to take on the role of director of basketball.

He will work with head coach John Lavery and assistant Mike Burton, providing scouting and recruitment support and lending his experience to Lavery when called upon.

“It is great to be back,” said Peers. “The club is in my blood. I have remained a fan since I left.

“But to be able to return and help this great club and these great fans rebuild and make Cheshire a stronghold for basketball once more is very exciting.

“John is a great coach but you cannot run a club on your own. You need people around you. I had Mike Burton and now John has Mike and me.”

Peers’ defining season as head coach came in 2001/02 when the Jets – as they were then known – won every single BBL competition. They were crowned BBL champions and also won the BBL Championship Play-off, BBL Cup and BBL Trophy – an achievement which was instantly dubbed the ‘JetWash’.

Head coach Lavery said: “I don’t think there are many coaches who can draw on the knowledge I have around me now with Robbie and Mike.”
